Relocating History
William B. Meyer, Inc. Assists Fairfield Museum and History Center

(Fairfield, CT) Imagine rooms and a vault filled with over 12,000 volumes of books and over 100 collections of manuscripts all dating back to the early 1600's that need to move to a new home. That's the challenge that the Fairfield Museum and History Center faced and the natural solution was to call one of the premiere library relocation and management specialists located right in their own backyard, William B. Meyer, Inc.

According to Michael Jehle, executive director, Fairfield Museum and History Center, "We are so pleased to have William B. Meyer's team working to move our rare collection of books, archives and artifacts. Their experience ensures that our collections are handled safely through the moving process into the new museum."

Phase One of the library move began today and the specialists at William B. Meyer, Inc. carefully moved stacks and stacks of books with their special white glove treatment. The books will be housed in their new home at the museum, located at 370 Beach Road. The library is considered one of the state's most important and comprehensive historical archives, and is utilized by more than 5,000 researchers each year. At the Fairfield Museum and History Center, the new library will be a beautiful, comfortable environment with the latest in library technology, and a spacious new Reading Room, overlooking the town green.

One of the most valued books moved today was entitled Fairfield Ancient and Modern written by Frank Samuel Child in 1909. It is 'a brief account, historic and descriptive of a Famous Connecticut Town' according to the author who was the President of the Fairfield Historical Society. Other records of interest include, Block Maps of Early Fairfield, which shows the original four squares that comprised Fairfield, and church records of marriages, baptisms and council minutes dating from the 1600s.

Phase Two of the relocation of the Fairfield Museum and History Center's library will include moving maps and archived photos. That relocation is scheduled for mid-July. Prior to today's move, William B. Meyer, Inc. relocated the museum's entire collection of historical artifacts, and plans to relocate the organization's offices later this summer.

The series of moves is all leading up to the grand opening of the new Fairfield Museum and History Center, set for September 16, 2007. At the opening, visitors will be treated to a parade, a period re-enactor mock-battle, crafters, demonstrators, food and family entertainment. For more information, please visit www.fairfieldhs.org.
