William B. Meyer, Inc. Relocates
Rare John Adams Collection
(Stratford, CT) When the Boston Public Library embarked on a plan to unveil the complete personal library of founding father and lifelong book collector John Adams to the public in an exhibition entitled, John Adams Unbound, they turned to the specialists at William B. Meyer, Inc. for their expertise. Well-respected throughout the country, William B. Meyer, Inc. is known as the premiere library relocation expert.
William B. Meyer, Inc.’s comprehensive knowledge of handling rare library collections combined with their extensive experience in archive storage made this relocation project a natural application of its proficiency. “It was an honor to be selected by an organization as prestigious as the Boston Public Library to assist with their project.” stated Tom Gillon, President, William B. Meyer, Inc. “At William B. Meyer, Inc., we take pride in our knowledge of state of the art techniques that make us skillful in moving such precious, historic documents like John Adams’s rare books and manuscripts.” The relocation of John Adams historic documents was completed last week in time for the exhibition’s opening. William B. Meyer, Inc. carefully packed over 3,700 items and re-shelved them in specially constructed 12 foot high cases. Working closely with the shelving fabricator, each unit was security sealed with plexi-glass panels as the volumes were re-shelved. The John Adams project was supervised and executed by the William B. Meyer, Inc. Library Relocation and Management business line’s senior project managers; Carla Caforio, Bob Lieberwirth and Dave Anderson.
John Adams Unbound marks the first public exhibition of the complete personal library of John Adams which opened on September 22nd will run through April 1st. This event is the culmination of a three-year project to catalog, preserve, digitize and provide access to the extraordinary personal library of the second president, which has been held by the Boston Public Library since 1894. The exhibition is multi-faceted and includes portraits of some of the famous politicians, philosophers, revolutionaries and writers with whom Adams associated; photographs of generations of the powerful Adams family; correspondence which Adams was famous for and historical maps depicting Adams's New England. The collection is of particular interest to scholars and historians because Adams recorded thousands of interpretive and critical manuscript annotations in the margins of hundreds of his books
The level of professionalism exhibited by William B. Meyer, Inc. was unparalleled. Moving these priceless, historic documents we thought would be an unnerving experience and an arduous task. Instead it turned out to be the most pleasant and smoothest experience we had in creating John Adams Unbound. The level of personal pride that the William B. Meyer, Inc. Library Relocation team exhibited was a tremendous asset. They were just as excited as we were.” stated Beth Prindle, Manager of the John Adams Library Project, Boston Public Library. “The product of their work, the book wall, is the centerpiece of our show. Creating it with their assistance was seamless. We look forward to working with them again in April when the show closes.”
